Field trip to Floriade Expo 2022 in Almere

On Tuesday 31 May 2022, students from the Hague and Amsterdam campuses traveled to Floriade Expo 2022 in Almere, a field trip organised by the SDG Learning Community of Hotelschool The Hague.

Floriade is a world horticultural exhibition that takes place in the Netherlands only once in a decade. This is the 7th time that the exhibition is held in the Netherlands and this year's theme is ‘Growing Green Cities’ featuring all kinds of green innovations to make cities more fun, liveable and sustainable.

The trip to Floriade was very inspiring in showing the diversity of innovative approaches that businesses worldwide are trying to implement to make a way for a greener future

Students were able to explore the exhibition and get inspired by great innovations; from the world’s first stainless steel cow to tasty morsels made from celebrities’ stem cells and from houses made of recycled plastic to cities and gardens of the future. They also visited the Aeres Hogeschool Almere for a World-Café format discussion. The brainstorming session focused on two main themes: “Be the change you wish to see in the world” and “Would you like to shape the hospitality industry?”. Inspired by the latest green innovations, solutions, and technologies present in the park as well as the scent and colors of flowers, students presented various ideas for what could be added to the curriculum and the social activities related to the SDGs.

Stimulated by what the park has to offer, students suggested actions to improve Hotelschool The Hague’s operations for a greater SDG impact and ways to tackle the SDG issues faced by the hospitality industry such as climate change, food waste, inequality, and the urgency of transitioning toward a circular economy.
