Studying abroad? Here's how to fit your life in two suitcases
Congratulations on being accepted to Hotelschool The Hague! An exciting adventure awaits you - new friends, challenges, and experiences. You’ve probably checked off a long list of tasks for your big move, from paperwork to goodbyes. And now comes one of the final hurdles: packing. How do you fit your entire life into just two suitcases? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with some handy tips so you're fully prepared without feeling stressed.
Read the airline’s luggage rules
Before you start throwing your wardrobe into your suitcase, check the airline's luggage restrictions. Every airline has different rules about baggage weight and size, and you want to avoid any last-minute surprises at the check-in counter. For example, if you're flying Economy or Comfort with KLM, they allow up to 12kg for your carry-on plus a personal item, that’s the combined total—so don’t pack a 12kg carry-on and expect to bring an extra 2kg laptop bag without extra fees! Double-check your airline’s rules to avoid any unnecessary headaches at the gate.
Pack smart, not more
While you may not have had your strategy lectures yet, it’s time to think strategically! What’s the weather like in the Netherlands? It can be rainy and windy, especially near the coast in The Hague, so pack a reliable raincoat and windbreaker. Don’t worry though, we also get plenty of sunshine, so sunglasses are a must. Another thing to keep in mind: the Dutch love their bikes, and you’ll probably end up cycling everywhere because it is so convenient. So, be practical and keep your wardrobe bike-friendly!
Ask yourself: “Do I Really Need This?”
When it comes to packing, it’s easy to fall into the trap of bringing too much. Before you toss that popcorn maker into your suitcase, ask yourself, “Do I really need this?” Chances are, you’ll find you don’t need half the stuff you originally thought. Focus on packing the essentials, because space is limited, and you don’t want to waste it on things you can easily live without. A helpful hint: if you’re unsure about an item, leave it behind. You can always buy what you need once you’re settled.
Skip the food - you’ll find plenty here
We get it -you might be tempted to pack a stash of your favourite snacks. But trust us, the Netherlands has a wide variety of supermarkets and international food options. Whether it’s peanut butter or any other comfort food, you’ll probably find it here. So, save that valuable luggage space for more important things (like an extra pair of shoes or your favourite hoodie) and leave the food behind.
Make room for sentimental items
While it’s important to pack the essentials, don’t forget to leave space for a few sentimental items. Moving abroad is a big step, and there will be moments when you miss home. Whether it’s a framed photo of friends, a small memento from your family, or even something that reminds you of your pet, these personal touches can bring comfort and familiarity to your new space. Remember, packing for your study abroad experience isn’t just about clothes and gadgets—it’s about bringing a little piece of home with you too.
Extra tips for first-time travellers
Tech essentials: Don’t forget to pack a universal power adapter and maybe even an extra phone charger. You’ll be using your devices often, whether navigating your way around campus or staying in touch with loved ones.
Space-saving hacks: Invest in packing cubes to organise everything and maximise suitcase space. They’ll also make unpacking at Skotel a breeze!
