It is never too early to pursue your dream
An Interview with Lynndell Melles, Founder and CEO of MELLES PEOPLE – By Julia Kobiolka
In this week's feature, we spotlight Lynndell Melles, the visionary founder and CEO of MELLES PEOPLE. Since graduating from Hotelschool The Hague in 2018, Lynndell has built an industry-leading high-end hospitality agency, setting the bar for excellence in staffing and service. Her journey is one of determination, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to her vision.
What did you do after graduating?
The journey of MELLES PEOPLE began while I was still a student at Hotelschool The Hague. By the time I graduated, the foundation had already been laid with an office, a team, and a clear direction. This allowed me to fully commit to growing the company. Balancing entrepreneurship with studies was a challenge, but my internship at Mise en Place provided invaluable lessons. Though they didn't implement the improvements I proposed in my thesis, I applied those ideas to MELLES PEOPLE with great success. This experience validated the importance of thinking critically and executing boldly.
When did you discover your passion for entrepreneurship?
I’ve always been an active person, constantly seeking new challenges. My entrepreneurial journey started almost by accident when a friend needed staff for an event. I gathered people I trusted and thought were well-suited for hospitality. That night, a caterer from the Johan Cruijff ArenA asked if we could assist with their events as well. What began as a one-off opportunity quickly snowballed into something much larger. Over time, I realised that I had not just found a business opportunity but a calling to elevate standards in the hospitality industry.
How did MELLES PEOPLE take shape?
MELLES PEOPLE specialises in delivering top-tier hospitality staff, from baristas and waiters to chauffeurs and receptionists. We support events ranging from Formula 1 and the KLM Open to private weddings and corporate functions. What sets us apart is our commitment to quality and tailored solutions. Every new hire undergoes a comprehensive training program to ensure they meet our high standards. Our goal is simple yet ambitious: to create memorable experiences for clients and empower our staff to thrive in their careers.
Where do you see MELLES PEOPLE in the future?
While I am incredibly proud of where we are today, I am committed to organic growth. We have thousands of team members across the country, but maintaining a happy and cohesive team is my priority. I want MELLES PEOPLE to continue to be a source of joy—for our staff, our clients, and the communities we serve. We aim to expand while staying true to our values, ensuring that every step forward is meaningful and sustainable.
What has been your biggest learning experience?
One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people. Trust is essential in business, and while you must ultimately rely on yourself, having a strong, supportive network can make all the difference. The saying "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with" resonates deeply with me. By building a team of passionate, trustworthy individuals, I’ve been able to achieve more than I ever could alone.
What achievement are you most proud of?
Being nominated for EY Entrepreneur of the Year was a tremendous honour, but my greatest achievement is the success of MELLES PEOPLE itself. It’s not just about financial results; it’s about creating a company that others respect and admire. Seeing the impact we’ve had—on clients, employees, and the industry as a whole—is incredibly fulfilling. This journey has been a collective effort, and I’m deeply grateful for my team’s dedication.

What mistakes have taught you the most?
In the early days, I hesitated to invest in essentials like a professional website or an accountant. I believed I could manage everything on my own. However, as the company grew, I realised that delegating and investing in expertise were crucial for scaling successfully. These early missteps taught me to focus on what truly matters and to trust others to handle areas outside my expertise.
What lessons from HTH shaped your success?
HTH instilled in me a mindset of resilience and creativity. One motto that has stayed with me is: "No is not an answer." This philosophy has driven me to overcome challenges and seize opportunities, even when the odds seemed stacked against me. It’s a reminder that success often depends on persistence and belief in your vision.
What advice would you give to graduating students?
Find something you are passionate about and dedicate yourself to it. True success comes not from working hard but from working smart and with purpose. Treat your career like a top athlete treats their sport—commit fully and let it become a part of your lifestyle. While work-life balance is important, don’t shy away from thinking about your work positively outside of office hours. When you love what you do, it won’t feel like work.
